Expect fuel economy and functionality to be major selling points for the all-new 2019 Silverado full-size pickup arrives in dealerships late this year.

Clever engineering trimmed 450 pounds from the weight of a V8 crew cab 2018 Silverado. New equipment will include the first power tailgate on a pickup and a 3.0L inline-six Duramax diesel to save fuel and reduce emissions while maintaining towing capacity.

The Silverado is 1.6 inches longer than the outgoing model, despite a 3.9-in. increase in wheelbase that contributes to up to 3.0 ins. of extra passenger room in crew cab models. Cargo room also increases.

Chevy will build two-door regular cab Silverados and extended cab models with a small rear seat and rear doors in addition to the very roomy four-door crew cab.

The seating position and roof are both about one inch higher, but the new truck looks very different, thanks to an extremely short front overhang and slim headlights  and distinctive running lights.

Other visual changes to the front include a new grille with “Chevrolet” cut into a broad center bar  some models, while others get Chevy’s traditional bow tie emblem. “Chevrolet” is stamped across the tailgate.

Chevrolet will initially offer eight trim levels from a basic work truck to the near-luxury High Country package.

Six engine/transmission combinations will be available, including new 5.3L and 6.2L V8s with fuel management systems that can shut off gasoline to any number of cylinders, and industry first.

The 3.0L diesel I-6 and 6.2L gasoline V8 are both paired with a new 10-speed automatic transmission.

Chevy saved weight by using light materials in targeted applications, including aluminum for the doors hood and tailgate. The fenders, roof and bed are steel. The bed and frame make extensive use of high-strength steel. 80% of the frame consists of high-strength steel that varies in thickness from 2 to 5 mm. Carbon-composite second-stage rear springs save 24 pounds versus the current truck’s steel springs.

Three different bed lengths will be available, all with more cargo volume.

Chevrolet says the 2019 Silverado is also significantly more aerodynamic.
