LUCKNOW: A day after the CBI filed a chargesheet against BJP MLA Kuldeep Sengar in the , the party‘s state president Mahendra Nath Pandey on Thursday said action would be taken against the legislator.

“The Yogi Adityanath government handed over the probe against Sengar to the CBI following the death of the rape survivor‘s father in police custody. The party will sack Sengar if he is convicted,” Pandey told TOI. The case has caused much embarrassment to the party at a time when it is gearing up to take on a united opposition in 2019 polls, according to senior BJP leaders in UP. “The opposition may sharpen its attack on the government and the party,” said a senior leader. A section of the party leadership said the MLA, who is currently lodged in Sitapur jail, should have been sacked soon after his arrest.

The matter was discussed during BJP chief Amit Shah‘s Lucknow visit in March, sources said. It was, however, decided that the party would wait for the probe to complete, said sources.

Sharpening attack on the ruling party, SP spokesperson Sunil Singh said the incident exposed the “real face of BJP”.

A senior BSP leader recalled how had acted against party MLAs and ministers found to be involved in criminal activities.
