BENGALURU: Wondering as to why the government has not been able to clean up the highly polluted for the past three years, the high court on Thursday directed that a senior official should appear before it on Friday and explain what’s happening with the waterbody.

“For three years, the big government of Karnataka could not do this small job. A responsible officer of the government who can speak for all departments should be present tomorrow,” a division bench headed by Justice HG Ramesh said, while adjourning the hearing on the PIL filed by Rajya Sabha member D Kupendra Reddy.

The bench also wanted to know if any experts are involved in the job. “Who’s the person doing the work? Are there any experts involved? Which department is looking after this? Is there anybody shouldering the responsibility? The government of Karnataka has no anxiety. This is our problem,” the judge said. Counsel for the government and public authorities informed the court that the will use the services of experts.

Earlier, P Ramprasad, counsel for Reddy, told the court that a recent spot inspection of the lake conducted as per National Green Tribunal directions revealed it is nothing but a septic tank.
